Call to participation
Verticale invites the public to participate in the new performance created by k.g. Guttman.
The artist invites you to become a host or a guest.
With this work, k.g. Guttman is asking how can artists and audience practice respectful and critical explorations with intimacy, proximity, and difference.
Would you like to participate,
and if so,
would you like to be a host or a guest?
What?
The performance consists of two audio tracks that the guest will listen to on their smartphone with headphones and a small bag of materials to look at that the artist will provide.
In the audio tracks, there are simple somatic instructions, for instance to close one’s eyes, imagine certain things, and to hold and look at a few objects.
Where?
The performance will take place in the midst of the home (the host’s home).
Depending on what role you choose for the performance, guest or host, you either invite yourself over to someone’s house or you invite someone to your house.
But the home is not the focus of the performance, and the intention is not to scrutinize the home.
Rather, the place of the performance is the body (the guest’s body) as it is experiencing this new environment through its senses.
Yet, at the periphery of the performance, there is also the new relations between the participants.
Who?
This is a key part of the piece: the person who is your host or your guest must be someone you do not know well, perhaps someone at the edge of your circle of acquaintances, a friend of a friend, or in your neighborhood.
Who’s home would you invite yourself over to?
Or who would you invite to your home?
And afterward?
To thank all participants, the artist will provide a food gift after the performance, part salty, part sweet.
Anyone who wishes will be welcome to experience the other role soon.
Finally, the artist will host a dinner in the summer for all participants who wish to share their experience.
