Marie-Douce St-Jacques
Marie-Douce St-Jacques grew up on an island. More specifically, on a short street in Laval. Except for a few areas within walking distance, she doesn’t know her home city that well. And yet, her family moved around more than once.
When she was born, she lived in a tiny, hundred-year-old house (now destroyed), at one end of the street. In 1986, she moved a few doors down, in the middle of the street. In 1996, she left Laval for Montréal. Finally, in 2018, her parents moved to the other end of the street. And so her family slowly made its way, from the beginning to the end of the same path; from early life to old age.
For Verticale’s residency in the archives, Marie-Douce St-Jacques will develop a project that addresses the themes of micro-movement, renewal, and relationships between different generations of artists. Among other things, she hopes to (re)discover her home city through Verticale’s many moves, especially those from the first half of the 1990s, when she was still a Laval resident.
