Verticale — centre d’artistes invites the public to Michelle Lacombe’s performance The Circle, a loose interpretation of Sacrifice, the second part of Igor Stravinsky’s renowned ballet The Rite of Spring. Conceived to be presented in the public space, the work is performed by a group of seven female co-performers driving red cars, and seven female classical musicians.
Michelle Lacombe’s work draws from field research that explores the visual and social construction of female gender and solidarity. At the intersection of celebration and transgression, the piece is informed by the culturally discordant worlds of suburban motorsports, classical dance, and the protest culture of second-wave feminist culture.
