In the course of my research, the notion of artist residency has proven to resist its definition due to its shifting and evolving nature. As a multifaceted and polysemous structure, the artist residency is like a living creative formula, much like the artistic practices it embraces. In Verticale’s case, the residency format manifested itself after the fact, either over time or through the projects it presented. It is precisely this context of the residency’s emergent format that I propose to reflect on here.

The digital tangent adopted by Verticale – centre d’artistes with its new Villa encourages me to reflect on the digital tools that are now inseparable from the artist residency context. The residency—once considered a kind of artist’s exile from their daily environment—was perceived as a period of isolation, uncertainty, and productive encounters that culminated in new work, a progression in their practice, and an opportunity for reflection. The role of social media in promoting and constructing public identity disrupts this notion by making it possible to maintain a constant virtual presence within this absence. The temporary, and once intimate, studio, is now on display online. The documentation process and its attendant technologies are becoming increasingly important, and a new way disseminating residency activity emerges, radically altering the experience of all participants, from artists to audiences and host communities.
