Verticale — centre d’artistes invites the public to the closing reception for walkin’ with cohen by artist karen elaine spencer. Over a year-long period, the artist slowly developed series of in situ performative actions and disseminations, both online and through the mail.
On a few occasions, the work took the form of interventions in the public space, where the artist carried the words of Leonard Cohen’s song “everybody knows” on her body. Some images stem from a dialogue between the artist and the photographic gaze as an active participant in her performances. But most of the time, karen elaine spencer carried out her walks differently, through her own writing and visual impressions of the process as it unfolded. In rarer instances, she would invite people, one by one, to accompany her on her wanderings, to share space in an intimate, yet public, way.
walkin’ with cohen is an invitation to encounter subjective and real worlds by experiencing landscapes divided by a river. This closing event is an opportunity to meet the artist and to experience the twilight hour together.
