Residencies in the archives
The residencies in the archives provides a deeper understanding of Verticale’s history through the eyes of artists Marie-Douce St-Jacques and Jocelyne Thibault, and author Catherine Barnabé, who are currently working with the centre to collectively imagine what its future might hold.
This one-time program allows two artists and one writer to create projects and texts in response to Verticale’s archives. The programme unfolds simultaneously with the centre’s current, ongoing archival processing. Working with archivists, the residency’s artists and author may consult documents to discover more about the centre’s history. In doing so, they gain knowledge about the archival process and conservation issues, leading to unique creative interactions for the development of contemporary art.
Our hope is that these artistic interpretations will be utopian, critical, sensitive, and ambivalent; that they allow past and future viewpoints on VCA’s potential to coalesce, and to renew links between artists of different generations and a variety of artistic practices and concerns.
