Verticale curator for L’Avant-Scène — A collaboration with [co]motion
Verticale – centre d’artistes is curator for visual art at L’Avant-scène. [Co]motion (previously the Corporation de la Salle André-Mathieu) will present three exhibitions in the lobby of Salle André-Mathieu this year, providing Laval residents with a brand-new venue for experiencing contemporary art. By selecting a range of artistic practices, Verticale hopes to provide the public with a meaningful slice of the current creative landscape.
As the only artist-run centre dedicated exclusively to visual arts in Laval, Verticale is called on to join forces with other regional cultural organizations, in ways that foster the strengths of each. The present collaboration with the Corporation de la Salle André-Mathieu gives Verticale the opportunity to reach out to members of Laval’s community and to act as an intermediary between it and the work of contemporary artists.
The artists Marie-Ève Martel, Christian Messier and Annie Baillargeon were selected for the distinctiveness of their artistic language, and for the capacity of their works to spur critical reflection on a variety of current topics as well as on art itself.
The chosen pieces are taken from past bodies of work, and therefore represent only a small part of what these three multidisciplinary artists have achieved in the areas of painting, drawing, and/or photography, as well as in sculpture, performance, and installation.
